Angola: "Through Our Own Eyes"In July 2007, anthropologist Nanette Barkey linked up with Africare staff in the central highlands of Angola to tell a story: a story about life, people and culture in the provincial capital of Kuito. Barkey handed disposable cameras to eight women and four men ― and asked them to "take pictures of your life in Kuito." From all the images, Barkey then asked the group to select six photos for public exhibition in the United States and in Angola. The chosen photos represent various facets of daily life in Kuito, including home, work, church, recreation, the effects of civil war and postwar growth-and-reconstruction efforts — efforts in which Africare continues to play a key role as Angola rebuilds. |
