Angola: "Through Our Own Eyes"

Camera 1., Nyemba:
A local woman walks down a major street in Kuito carrying supplies for her day's work. Behind her stand the ruins of a building destroyed during the civil conflict. Five years after the war's end, the building remains scarred with small bullet holes and is still missing its walls. Many buildings in Kuito bear the signs of war and remain in disrepair to this day.

Two men, each of whom lost a leg to a landmine explosion, wait to be seen at a local orthopedic clinic in preparation for their permanent prostheses. Landmines were placed throughout Angola during its 27-year-long civil war. It's estimated that millions of mines remain buried ― hidden, present dangers ― in the fields of Angola; identification and demining are desperately needed.
