In Flight From Darfur: Gaga Refugee Camp, ChadSince early 2005, Africare has been involved with the transfer of refugees from Darfur, Sudan, to camps in northeastern Chad. With Africare's support, local Chadian staff provide emergency humanitarian assistance, including: (1) the distribution of essential food and non-food items; (2) construction of infrastructure; and (3) training and provision of services in areas such as agriculture, livestock production, forestry and water-and-sanitation. Gaga is the 12th camp in eastern Chad established by UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees). It is located near Adré, about 60 kilometers from eastern Chad's main city of Abeché. By the end of December 2007, the Africare-managed Gaga Refugee Camp housed some 17,500 Darfurian refugees. |
