A Students' Log: "Empowering Children in Tanzania"

In June 2007, six American students from Columbia University visited several Africare projects in Tanzania, East Africa. As part of an organization called Students of the World (SOW), the group recorded their experiences through film, photography and a daily online blog in an effort to raise awareness of and support for Africare's work.

The SOW Columbia team was hosted by the field staff of Africare's Community-based Orphan Care, Protection and Empowerment (COPE) project, which is increasing local capacities to support orphans and other children made vulnerable by the HIV/AIDS pandemic. The program addresses basic needs like food, shelter, education, health care and income generation ― reaching more than 100,000 children and their caregivers in Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda.

Through the photos presented here, the SOW students illustrate Africare and local volunteers lessening the impact of HIV/AIDS on children and communities in Tanzania.
