Tell me a little bit about
St. Peter Baptist Church?
Our Pastor: Rev. Dr. Kirkland R. Walton
Our Location: 2040 Mountain Road Glen Allen, VA 23060
Our Membership: 1,600
St. Peter Baptist Church has been a lighthouse of Faith since its inception in November 1882. We are eternally grateful for our founding fathers who erected a building for Sunday School and religious services on a plot of land given by Mr. John Clacker. The Grace of God, the outstanding service of past leaders, and the faithfulness of the saints over more than a century have brought St. Peter to the height of blessings.
Presently there are more than 1,600 members on the church roll, and the Sunday School counts more than 125 members. St. Peter is an active participant in The American Baptist Churches USA, Lott Carey Foreign Mission Convention, Baptist General Convention of Virginia and Tuckahoe Baptist Association of Virginia.
As it continues to inspire souls for Christ, maintain a missionary spirit, and provide spiritual opportunities for all ages, St. Peter gives God the Glory for all things and seeks His guidance for the future.
St. Peter is located in the growing community of Glen Allen, which is rapidly evolved from a rural to a suburban area. Located approximately two miles from the Richmond City Limits and linked directly to interstates, I‐95, I‐64 and I‐295. Glen Allen is easily accessible to all of the medical, educational, recreational and cultural facilities offered by the Richmond Metropolitan area and adjacent vicinities.
Because of its convenient location, St. Peter draws its membership from many surrounding areas as well as the immediate area in the Brookland District. St. Peter is a community service and outreach church. While it maintains a close relationship with the sister churches in the Glen Allen area, it extends ministry throughout the greater metropolitan area, state, and out‐of‐state boundaries. St. Peter is a concerned church. It is vibrant in civic and local governmental affairs and it is a life member of the NAACP. The great potential of this community has been a contributing factor to the growth in membership, spiritual development, and service to the community that St. Peter has experienced.
St. Peter Baptist Church is blessed to have Dr. Kirkland R. Walton who has served this congregation as pastor since 1985. Under his leadership, many sons and daughters have been licensed to the Gospel Ministry with some serving as pastors and other staff persons in surrounding churches. During Pastor Walton's tenure, the membership has tripled in size; the church's budget has increased more than 100%.
How did you hear about Africare?
I was made aware of Africare through a friend who informed me about the extensive work and various programs that Africare provides to improve the quality of life of the people in Africa. St. Peter felt that it was our Christian duty to assist with the needs and concerns by getting involved with your efforts.
What made you decide to donate to Africare?
While researching various organizations, we discovered that Africare offered a lower administrative cost for donations, which means that more of our donated funds are actually allocated directly to the cause we want to support. Just this aspect alone significantly set Africare apart from the rest of the organizations.
You’ve supported Africare for more than 18 years. What influences your continued support?
Africare's ability to keep us apprised on what is being done within the organization whether it's through emails, newsletters, etc., and how funds are being allocated throughout the programs have kept us providing our continued support. It makes for a great partnership if you know whole‐heartedly that the partner shares the same common interest as well as the same passion about issues that we feel so strongly about.
