Africare Works to Rebuild Liberia
WASHINGTON, D.C. (February 2004) ... Out of a landscape of near total destruction, Africare, along with other major aid agencies and the Liberian people, is embarking on the tremendous task of rebuilding Liberia. On January 15, 2004, Africare participated in a major donor conference convened at the United Nations in New York to discuss the situation in Liberia. At the conference, key decision makers, such as Jacques Paul Klein, Coordinator for the UN in Liberia, Mark Malloch Brown, Chair of the UN Development Group, and members of the Liberian government, reviewed plans for the reconstruction of Liberia.
Liberia has been left devastated by 14 years of destructive civil war and political failure. With a peace agreement in place, the current transition period offers a vital opportunity for national recovery, and international support will play an important role in determining the success of Liberia's recovery. Reconstruction efforts will focus on the repair of social and economic systems, rebuilding communities, and laying the foundation for Liberia to become a productive, progressive, and secure democracy. In order for this to happen, human rights and the rule of law must be respected, and refugees and internally displaced people must be able to return home.
Africare President Surveys Destruction in Liberia
Africare President Julius E. Coles traveled to Liberia in January along with partner organization AmeriCares. The purpose of the trip was to distribute medical supplies to rural areas outside the capital of Monrovia, and to gain a first-hand knowledge of the situation in Liberia. Upon his return, Mr. Coles spoke of his trip and on behalf of American international nonprofit organizations at the International Reconstruction Conference on Liberia held at U.N. headquarters in New York, February 5 and 6.
