Africare Announces 2005 Bishop Walker Dinner

Annual Event Will Celebrate Africare's 35th Anniversary and Honor Former U.S. Secretary of State Colin L. Powell on October 13

WASHINGTON, D.C. (March 10, 2005)... The annual Africare Bishop John T. Walker Memorial Dinner will be held on Thursday, October 13, in Washington, D.C.

The Africare Bishop Walker Dinner is held each year in honor of the late John T. Walker, the first African-American Episcopal bishop of Washington, D.C., and long-time chairman of Africare. First held in October 1990, the Africare Bishop Walker Dinner is now the largest, most prestigious annual event for Africa in the United States. Dinner attendees include corporate, government, national, and international leaders, as well as individuals and groups who come because they care about Africa and want to lend whatever support they can. Event proceeds support Africare's mission of humanitarian assistance, which reaches families and communities all over Africa.

This year's Africare Bishop Walker Dinner will celebrate Africare's founding 35 year ago with its first project in the West African nation of Niger. Also at this year's event, former U.S. Secretary of State Colin L. Powell will receive the 2005 Bishop John T. Walker Distinguished Humanitarian Service Award.

For information about purchasing tickets or serving on the committee to raise funds for the Dinner, contact the Africare Bishop Walker Dinner Office at (202) 328-5364 or dinner@africare.org.
