Omega Psi Phi Donates to East African Tsunami Relief Effort

On September 7, 2005, Africare welcomed members of the Third District of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. The Third District includes 40 chapters in Virginia and the District of Columbia. Members presented Africare President Julius E. Coles with a generous donation to the Tsunami Relief Effort in East Africa.

Chairman of the Chapter Subcommittee, Brother Charles D. Chambliss, Jr., said, “the effort is a response to the appearance that more attention and resources were needed to address the impact of the tsunami on East Africa and the drain of funding to African based programs generally.”

President Coles was pleased to welcome the representatives, and noted “the earthquake and tidal wave that decimated many coastal regions of South Asia on December 26 extended a path of destruction all the way to the eastern coast of Africa. In Somalia, Seychelles, Kenya, and Tanzania, the tsunami caused considerable damage to homes, infrastructures, and businesses while also displacing many African peoples and families. Because Africare does not have a presence in Somalia, we will be sending these funds to our local partner agency, Horn Relief and Development Organization, which is based in Somalia and is working to help the affected people.”

The visit from Third District Leadership marks the renewal of the relationship between Africare and the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. Third District Subcommittee Chairman Brother Chambliss, Jr., Social Action Committee Chair William T. Calhoun, and District Representative Robert Lewis have encouraged additional chapters and districts to support the Tsunami relief efforts, and to continue the Fraternity’s partnership with Africare.
