Africare News Release
Children fending for themselves: African AIDS orphans have no parents and, no matter how young they are, they have only each other ... the older children struggle to serve as "parents" and breadwinners for their younger brothers and sisters. All these children need adult help and care. Helping Africa's Children Orphaned by AIDS, a project of Africare, can give the needed help and care to so many more needy orphans and the community members who want to give better care, if it's chosen as the winning project by The Members Project of American Express®. Vote by June 17!

Deadline: Sunday, June 17
WASHINGTON, DC, May 15, 2007 — Africare invites American Express® Cardmembers to help the youngest victims of the African AIDS epidemic — the AIDS orphans — through The Members Project. Vote by Sunday, June 17, to put Africa's AIDS orphans at the top of the list for the Members Project's $5 million grant. Africare will carry out the project, but we need your vote — which costs you nothing — to win the grant.
"The Members Project is an exciting and innovative new initiative that gives American Express® Cardmembers the chance to dream up, and ultimately unite behind, one idea that will have a positive impact in the world around us. American Express® will fund the winning idea with up to $5 million," the company announced today, going on to explain, "The Members Project is unique in that the project ideas are not generated by American Express®; they are generated by our Cardmembers."
PROBLEM • "The children AIDS has left behind": Africa, especially Southeastern Africa, has 80 percent of all the AIDS orphans in the world today. As their mothers die of AIDS, as their fathers die of AIDS, as their adult "extended families" die of AIDS, a whole new generation of African children are being forced to grow up too fast. At young ages, they have to take on adult responsibilities — raising their younger brothers and sisters, trying to earn some money to survive, trying to stay in school and keep their siblings in school … and those are struggles they often just can't win. They don't have enough food, they might have no shelter, they have no place to turn for medical care when they get sick, and they're exposed to all kinds of dangers "living on the streets." Truly, these are the children left behind. The last estimate by the World Health Organization stated that more than 12 million children in Africa have been orphaned by AIDS. Africare offers an outstanding project — called COPE — to help those forgotten children to become safe and secure and to have the education and training to build good futures for themselves.
COPE stands for Community-based Orphan Care,
Protection and Empowerment
SOLUTION * Africare's COPE Project: COPE aims to empower young children crippled by the loss of their parents and caretakers by giving both the children and the larger community the tools they need. The Africare work addresses basic needs like food, shelter, education, health care and age-appropriate income-generating activities. COPE is now active in four Southeastern African nations — Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda — and aims to help 2 million orphans and vulnerable children and to strengthen their community care-giving networks. Easing their pain. Giving back the opportunities and support they need to succeed.
HOW YOU CAN HELP • Through the American Express® Members Project: For every Cardmember who participates, American Express® will donate $1 — up to $5 million to help make one project come to life. COPE can be the next project!

Project Description: Food, Shelter, Education, Healthcare, and Economic Income: 12 million children in Africa are forced to cope without dependable access to these basic necessities on a daily basis. The death of a mother, father or guardian due to the AIDS pandemic has forced millions of children to assume the roles of adulthood in order to provide for their family. The need for a program to address these concerns is imperative to levy the burden placed on the shoulders of these children, and address the long-term needs of a new generation left to fend for themselves. The ideal program would support Africa's orphans and vulnerable children in the areas of: Food, Shelter, Education, Healthcare, and Income Generation. These basic necessities are the keys to life... necessities that every child deserves.
