“God Bless Africare.” - Nancy Long, Sisu Painting

Tell me a little bit about yourself, your background and the history of Sisu Painting?

I live in Beaverton, Oregon, which is a suburb outside of Portland with my partner Cylina.

We formed a partnership in 2000 and have grown our painting business from a two woman painting crew to a company with over 15 employees.

Having a 100 percent women owned business is rare in the painting industry, but it is our customer service that sets us apart from the competition.

I manage the sales and marketing for the company and Cylina handles the operations. We work long hours, but in our down time, we enjoy traveling, gardening, reading and spending time with my three grandchildren.

How did you hear about Africare?

We were thinking about donating to a charity and after doing some research, found Africare on a website called Charity Watch.  Africare was highly rated in the area of international development and relief with an A+ rating.

What made you choose us?

I liked that Africare’s focus was on the people in Africa and that the majority of the money (94 cents to a dollar) made it into the hands of the needy people.  I’ve donated for several months since April and I like the fact that I’m not bombarded with emails and mailers requesting more money.

What made you decide to donate to Africare?

After reading some alarming statistics on world poverty, we found such a large population of the world was starving- particularly in Africa.

It’s so easy for us to get wrapped up in the stress of owning a business and other obligations that we forget how fortunate we are.

So we decided to think of a way to give back and honestly, after extensive research, Africare seemed like the best choice.

The truth is, I don’t know the first thing about being hungry, cold or going without.  I have a lovely home, a comfy bed and a big refrigerator full of food. With all the blessings I have enjoyed over the years, it would be a disgrace to me if I didn’t reach into my pocket book and give to those less fortunate.  Even as I write this, I am convinced that I should do more.  It would be impossible to give enough, the need is too great, but doing the little I can is way better than doing nothing at all.

God Bless Africare.
