“If it was not for the PDEV Program, I would still have been wandering around unemployed. Now I can proudly say that because of Africare, I am employed and working towards a career.” - Afisu

Designing a World of New Opportunities

Afisu Aminou is a dynamic 23 year old living in Niamey, Niger.  When Africare first met him through his youth association, FADA, he was unemployed and had no type of training to qualify him for jobs. Africare introduced FADA to Peace through Development (PDEV), funded by USAID and managed by the Academy of Educational Development (AED). PDEV consists of numerous initiatives, including educating youth in various vocational training programs, followed by small grants to fund successful business start-ups.  The overall goal of the program is to increase opportunities for at-risk youth to get off the streets by ensuring an alternative and productive lifestyle. Africare took seven out of 17 of Afisu’s FADA group members into the program, and he was one of them.

With the support of the PDEV program, Afisu embraced learning all there is to know about how to become a renowned tailor. Quickly becoming a leader in his classroom, it was obvious that Afisu was a student that others admired and respected.  He now hopes to one day become a great stylist and own his own fashion studio. Afisu expressed his feelings this way: “If it was not for the PDEV Program, I would still have been wandering around unemployed. Now I can proudly say that because of Africare, I am employed and working towards a career.”

Apart from owning his own studio, Afisu has many other hopes and dreams. Not forgetting where he came from, Afisu desires to eventually give back and help other unemployed youth still living on the streets who have not had the chance to receive training. Afisu wants to offer them the opportunity to come and learn with him at his fashion studio. By doing so, he will complete the circle and will have accomplished the ultimate goal -- giving back to his community the way PDEV was able to give to him.

“I deeply thank the PDEV Program for helping me. I am really pleased, proud, and satisfied.”
