In 2009-2010, Africare worked through local partners to reunite 80 young girls living on the streets of Kinshasa with their families. Each of these families received support for an income-generating activity to address the primary cause of child abandonment: poverty. In addition, Africare transferred 18 young mothers living on the streets with their babies to a residential protection center where they received six months of intensive training in sewing, hairdressing, and catering. Upon graduation from their training, Africare gave these young women equipment to help them begin businesses. |
Currently, Africare has no programs in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
