History of Africare in The Gambia:
Africare's assistance to The Gambia began in 1975, with a village-level agricultural project at Marakissa. In 1981, the Gambian government asked Africare to assist in a study of the country's problems with rural pharmaceutical distribution. From that study grew a multiyear initiative to support the rehabilitation of the system nationwide: an effort that was funded by major U.S. pharmaceutical manufacturers and that drew extensive praise from international health authorities. Since 1983, the successful Gambian model has been replicated in Ghana, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and other countries.
