Walking for Water and for Africa!

In May 2010, Stephen Axelson, a sophomore at Oakton High School, partnered with Africare to organize Walk for Water 2010, a 5K walk/run in Fairfax, VA. The May 16 event brought together 400 supporters and volunteers to raise funds that will build wells in rural Africa, improving the quality of life for many who must walk miles each day to obtain clean drinking water.

Stephen set his goals high from the beginning, aiming to raise $5,000. But after months of planning, preparation (including the development of his own website to promote the event!), the Oakton Sophomore and his community raised $15,000!

His advice to fundraisers his age:

“Don’t get scared by the work load. It sounds like a lot of work (and it is), but set up a committee, delegate work … it’s a lot easier.  Remind yourself of what you’re doing and who you’re doing it for.  And hopefully your heart will drive you.”

Africare is proud to salute Stephen Axelson and his efforts to bring clean water to Africa!
