Pick a Program or Project
There are many different ways you can reach out to communities in Africa. First, you may wish to identify what you or your organization is passionate about. Are you interested in addressing drought conditions? Are you a group of students at a culinary institute, with food as your focus? Maybe you're a nursing organization interested in assisting children and families dealing with HIV/AIDS. Regardless of your charitable goals, Africare is engaged in a wide range of program areas ― and one of them is the right program for you.
Our programs focus on food security and agriculture, health and HIV/AIDS, emergency humanitarian aid, water, the environment, education and much more. You can support Africare in any of those areas specifically or you can donate your contributions without restrictions, allowing Africare to use your support where it is most needed. How you help really depends on your or your organization's interest.
Fundraising for a program area: Picking a program to support is easy. Learn more about Africare's program areas here.
Example: Perhaps your interest is water. Did you know that 70 percent of the earth is covered in water but just over 2 percent is consumable? Did you also know that the average African woman walks four miles a day to collect water? Every year, Africare's work brings clean, reliable water to thousands of remote communities in Africa. So, if water is your passion, you can raise money and specify that your funds be donated to help this program area.
Fundraising for a specific project. Visit the What We Do section of this Web site for ideas, not just about general program areas, but also about some of the specific projects within our program areas.
Example: Maybe you have been keeping abreast of political unrest or natural disasters on the continent. Emergency humanitarian aid is one way to support individuals and societies in Africa. For example, contributing to projects that address the essential needs, Africare manages two refugee camps in the West African nation of Chad (1) Care and Assistance to Sudanese Refugees in Eastern Chad (CARSEC) and (2) Central African Republic Refugees Assistance Project (CARAP). Through these projects, Africare works to ensure the protection and well-being of Sudanese (from Darfur) and Central African refugees fleeing from political instability and violence in their own countries. These are just two of over 150 Africare-sponsored projects that you can support through a fundraising activity.
Who Raises Funds?
No group is too large or too small to host a successful fundraiser. Here are some examples:
Community: Churches, mosques and synagogues; youth groups and neighborhood organizations; civic groups, professional organizations and police/firefighter organizations; and more.
Scholastic: Athletic teams, student government, fraternities and sororities, theater clubs, language clubs, band/choir/glee clubs, cheerleaders, debate teams, science clubs — even grade school classes are not too young.
Friends and family: Quilting circles, book clubs, family reunions, marathon training groups, exercise groups and special occasions (in lieu of wedding gifts or funeral flowers, as birthday gifts or to mark other occasions).
