Burundi

Africare's first project in Burundi, water resource development, began in 1993 just before the most serious fighting broke out. Africare also supported a major project to strengthen Burundian community groups, improving their overall functioning while at the same time introducing strategies for conflict management — and thereby contributing to the national process of peace. In Tanzania, Africare has provided emergency humanitarian aid to more than 50,000 Burundian refugees.

Current Africare assistance to Burundi:

  • Food security
  • Community-based rural development
  • Vocational training
  • Resettlement of internally displaced persons and returning refugees
  • Demobilization of ex-combatants
  • Strengthening of indigenous non-governmental organizations
