Central African Republic

Africare began its assistance to the Central African Republic in 1984. Agricultural development was the initial focus. The first projects focused on helping small-scale farmers to increase the availability of food by improving mechanisms for storing and processing harvested crops. Subsequent work addressed food production and marketing and, more generally, agricultural enterprise development for the rural poor. In 1990, the CAR was the site of one of Africare's earlier HIV/AIDS prevention efforts: the establishment of the AIDS Education and Training Center in the capital city of Bangui. A major child survival project followed in 1993. For several years beginning in 1994, near the village of Mboki, Africare provided assistance to more than 33,000 refugees from civil war in neighboring Sudan.

Currently, Africare has no programs within the CAR. However, Africare is providing:

  • Emergency assistance to Central African refugees in Chad.
