Africare's assistance to Guinea, begun in 1987, has supported that transition. The first project — an assessment of the existing network of small-scale agricultural entrepreneurs — laid the groundwork for subsequent activities aimed at strengthening those entrepreneurs and otherwise promoting the expansion of agribusiness at the grassroots. Related activities have been in areas such as food production, food monetization, community-based road maintenance, urban sanitation and child survival. In every case, the objective, consistent with the country's democratic aims, has been to empower local people to solve development problems on their own.
