Mali

Africare has carried out more than 100 projects in Mali, since the first assistance — relief to victims of a major West African drought — in 1973. Well construction and other forms of water resource development have been priorities in this dry, drought-prone country along the southern edge of the Sahara Desert. Equally, Africare has worked with village populations to increase the production of all types of food, manage precious natural resources, bring health care to isolated and underserved communities, and increase rural incomes and revitalize rural economies. The work has expanded in recent years to include programs in governance, enterprise development and education.

Current Africare assistance to Mali:

  • Food security
  • Child survival
  • Primary education for girls
  • Microenterprise development
  • Development of rural radio networks
  • Local-level governance training
