Senegal — like Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania and Niger — is one of the founding countries of Africare. Africare's long history of successful work in Senegal began in the early 1970s, with emergency drought relief as well as an irrigated agriculture project in the village of Ronkh. More than 100 water, environmental, agricultural, health and governance projects have followed, reaching most of the areas of rural Senegal. A major project, from 1993 to 1998, combined food production, environmental management and income generation in 56 villages of the Kaolack region — demonstrating that farmers can grow enough food to feed themselves and to sell for profit, without depleting the natural resource base. Major health programs have addressed problems such as malaria, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS.
