Africare In the News

For the past three years, 25-year-old Elsha Stockseth of South Weber, Utah, has used her tech-savvy talents to design and sell holiday cards to her friends and family. All the proceeds from her sales are then donated to support a cause Elsha feels passionately about: clean water in Africa. While many of Elsha’s peers share this passion, very few have gone to the lengths Elsha has gone to in creating each card. Below, Elsha tells her story.

Elsha’s Story

I am 25 years old but only weigh 40 pounds because I have Muscular Dystrophy. Since I can’t paint or draw with my arms and hands anymore, I still do my artwork with a HeadMouse Extreme and Photoshop software.  The HeadMouse is a device that allows me to continue doing work on my computer with another program called Keystrokes which is an on-screen keyboard with a dwell feature.  This is the third year that I have designed Christmas cards and sold them to friends and family. Part of the proceeds I collect have been sent to the African Well Fund to help provide essential water to people in third world countries.  I also use part of the proceeds along with some of my own money to send school supplies, blankets and toys to the children in Queenstown South Africa.I am writing to update you about a project I have done for three years to raise money for the African Well Fund (via Africare) and to buy needed supplies for children in Queenstown, South Africa.

I have received many pictures of the children receiving the supplies I’ve sent and the joy that is shown on their faces is inspiring enough to make me want to do even more for them in the future.  We are so blessed to have the things we do that some times we take what we have for granted.  My dream for the future is that people everywhere around the world will someday have the fresh water they need and their basic needs met.  I hope that the small part I am playing will be enough to inspire others to do similar acts of kindness so that one day, like Bono says, we can “Make Poverty History.”
