In the wake of the US-Africa Leaders Summit, Africare President Darius Mans met Wednesday with the recently appointed United Nations Special Envoy to the Sahel Hiroute Guebre-Selassie at Africare House in Washington, D.C. Ms. Selassie and Dr. Mans took the opportunity to share their plans for their respective organizations, and they sought to learn how they could better support each other’s missions.

WASHINGTON (December 12, 2013) — Africare, a non-profit organization committed to improving the lives of people in Africa, today announced its partnership with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority (AKA) for a candlelight vigil honoring the legacy of Nelson Mandela. The Alpha, Xi Omega, Xi Zeta Omega and Rho Mu Omega Chapters will participate in a community ceremony with Africare on Sunday, December 15, 2013 on The Yard at Howard University at 5:00 p.m.

Nelson Mandela possessed a monumental backbone.He wrote in his autobiography, Long Walk to Freedom, that he liked to think he inherited his father’s “straight and stately posture.” He was right. Mandela stood up perfectly straight – over six feet tall – and in every way nobly towered over his adversaries. He firmly demanded his own and others’ rights whenever they were withheld, never blinking in the face of intimidation. He was principled. He considered matters thoroughly, so he acted with poise and with full knowledge of the possible consequences, however grave.
