ABUJA, Nigeria (November 19, 2013) — The National Basketball Association (NBA), Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA), Africare and ExxonMobil today announced the launch of “Power Forward,” a youth engagement initiative that will use basketball to develop health, leadership and life skills in Nigeria. Nigerian native and Hall of Famer Hakeem Olajuwon, fellow countryman and former NBA player Obinna Ekezie and three-time WNBA champion Swin Cash joined leading Nigerian government officials in tipping off the program today during a two-day launch event in Abuja.

Africare Appoints Four New Members to Board of Directors

WASHINGTON (August 22, 2013) – Africare, a non-profit organization committed to improving the lives of people in Africa, today announced that its board of directors has appointed four new members. Mamadou Beye, manager, International Affairs at Chevron; Jeffrey R. Krilla, co-chair, Africa Practice, Dentons, LLP; Bobby Pittman, managing partner, Kupanda Capital; and General William “Kip” Ward, senior advisor, SENTEL Corporation, will join Africare’s board of directors, effective today.

The good news is that hunger is decreasing globally. The number of chronically hungry people shrank from nearly one in five people worldwide between 1990 and 1992, to about one in eight people between 2010 and 2012. That is real progress, but it is too soon to celebrate.
