Success in Ghana
Using a generous donation from United States President Barack Obama, Africare/Ghana successfully facilitated the emergence of a sanitation market in four communities, where 80% of people had previously been dissatisfied with the quality of their water and 90% of the population shared a latrine with up to 30 people. Africare supported community-built infrastructure investments to improve access to clean water. Also, Africare trained masons to construct low-cost, ventilated latrines while facilitating a community led behavior change campaign to increase knowledge of the benefits of clean water and sanitation practices. By the project’s end in 2011, more than 80 latrines had been constructed, and communities were well on their way to closing their sanitation gap.
In the ongoing Sustainable Food Security and Environmental Health Project, Africare’s Steering Committee concept of internal project governance comprising all project stakeholders has won the admiration of the donor, the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa, and has ensured sustainability and capacity building in project implementation. Africare/Ghana achieved the project target of benefiting 30,000 farmers directly and indirectly in 18 months, a year and a half ahead of schedule.
